Personal protective equipment, also known as PPE, are the crucial items that healthcare workers need to use in order to protect themselves from fluids and infectious diseases. PPE includes gowns, gloves, masks, and face shields. Some of these items are typically designed for single-use, meaning that they are taken off and thrown out after treating a patient. Other items are able to be sterilized and reused. New nurses must know which items are to be retained for reuse and which need to be disposed of properly. Always follow your employer’s procedures for the proper use of PPE. If you’re unsure of the policy regarding a specific item, don’t hesitate to ask your supervisor.
