One of the dark sides of nursing that isn’t often discussed is patient harassment. From inappropriate comments to uncomfortable physical interactions, it can take many forms. Patients are in a vulnerable position, but that doesn’t give them any right to treat caregivers poorly. Set firm boundaries with the patient and don’t be afraid to speak up. Let them know when their behavior is not acceptable. If you find yourself in a difficult situation, it’s important to speak with your supervisor. You can also share with a coworker to make them aware. Harassment in any form does not have to be tolerated by nurses. Find out if your healthcare facility has an existing policy in place and understand how to report an incident.
