As nurses, we become used to dealing with bodily fluids on a daily and sometimes even hourly basis. However, that doesn’t make it any more pleasant. To make handling these situations more tolerable, there are a few things that you can do. First, always remember to wear your protective gear. Gloves are essential and masks can help to keep the worst odors at bay. Next, always keep your focus on assisting the patient. Remember that it isn’t about you and your feelings.
Your focus always has to be on how you can best help your patient and care for them. Finally, know when you need to take a minute to yourself. After dealing with an unpleasant situation, take a few moments to collect yourself. Over time, dealing with fluids will become more routine and hopefully, easier to tolerate.
