Most nurses enter the field because they truly care about helping others. However, that doesn’t mean that a good bedside manner comes naturally to every nurse.

For some, it can take a little time to become more comfortable caring for patients and displaying warmth and compassion at the same time. Sometimes, a new nurse may be focused on the task at hand, and forget that the individual being cared for needs a kind word and compassionate attitude. To improve your bedside manner, try slowing down while you’re with patients.

Greet them, and then talk to them briefly to help them feel more comfortable. Over time, your interpersonal skills should improve.
